Recently I have read that one should not lift objects with a backhoe. Isthis from fear of damaging the hoe, tipping the tractor, or what? I havebeen thinking I could lift logs with a hoe...is this not good?

I have not heard such a warning. In fact, I've read a couple of descriptionsof exactly how TO lift things with a backhoe.I'm curious here you've read this. -Ken ....

Hi KenB-- I read this on someones web page...Not exactly a professional opinion or statement. He had a photo lifting a septic system distribution box cover with his backhoe. The caption mentioned "While lifting objects with abackhoe is not a good idea...". Seems like he was far more experienced withtractors and the like than me (it doesn't take much!) so I thought I wouldask the experts. I am planning to build a log home and misc. log structuresand was thinking I could use the backhoe to lift logs up to maybe 6-8' or so.These would be long (maybe 28') logs, so balance would be a concern. Weight would vary...with 2000 lbs or so being the max. I've been thinking the purchaseof a full size backhoe might be great for me...I have empty land at this point.I attended an auction last weekend in my area (Finger Lakes area in NY State) where 2WD backhoes (FORD 555) sold for about $6500...with some 4000 hoursor so. I wasn't there to bid that time, but I thought perhaps at the next auction... ....

My manual for the backhoe tells me where to hook on the arm when lifting items with it. I have a JD. ....

Many full size backhoe buckets (at least my Case) have a hook welded to the bottom for just this purpose. If your not suppose to lift anything with the backhoe, what about the fill or lg. rock that is in the bucket? You can't lift it and put it into a dumptruck? You must be careful however. I've almost put it over several times when swinging a larger than I shouldv'e boulder to the side. KNOW YOUR MACHINES LIMITATIONS. If you don't know do a test move close to the ground extending the bucket farther than you will when you make the lift.This is all my personal opion. Don't slam me if damage to your equipment or life occurs. ....

Well, my 3 point backhoe doesn't have much power to lift things. The dipper willcurl inwith immense power, and the bucket has lots of power, but it really won'tlift a lot of weight. It lifts anything you can put in the bucket just fine, andsometimes lifts large rocks by trapping them between the bucket teeth and thearm, but that is about the limit of it. Also, it is not well supported toresist a side load. If your load is off center this could twist the backhoe armsand tweak it. Also the further you extend the arm, the less it can lift. And several times I have been surprised when I swung a heavy load to the side with the backhoe and the whole tractor got kind of tippy. This is with asmall backhoe and a 6500 lb tractor. There are limits to any piece of machinery. You just figure out whatit can and cannot do and work that way......As far as I know there are no rulesto all this.....except maybe Darwin's rules....:-) Roger L. ....

I have a 23hp Yanmar excavator and use it to lift and skid logs. It has a hook on the bucket for lifting and works fine. I have used tongs, a cat choker and grabbed logs between the bucket and arm. I have seen bucket extension fingers/teeth one can add to make it easier and have also read in this forum of fixed "thumbs" (like a spur on a chicken) to aid in this. Just be careful as a log dangling in the air can make things very tippy and can swing around damaging you and your tractor. ....
